로렌스 더럴(지은이)
1912년 인도의 다르질링에서 태어났다. 다르질링의 예수회 대학에 다녔고, 영국 켄터베리에 있는 세인트 에드몬드 스쿨을 졸업한 뒤 통신원으로 세계 각지에서 일했다. 데뷔작은 1938년 파리에서 헨리 밀러와 아나이스 닌의 후원 아래 발표한 <검은 책>이다. 더럴은 후에 ‘이 작품을 쓰면서 나는 처음으로 내 자신의 목소리를 들을 수 있었다.’라고 회고했으며 그 소설은 1930년대 모더니즘의 대표 문인이자 노벨문학상 수상자인 T. S. 엘리엇의 찬사를 받았다. 엘리엇은 1943년에 더럴이 첫 번째 시집인 <혼자만의 나라>를 출간하는 데 도움을 주기도 했다. 처음으로 섬을 소재로 쓰기 시작한 작품은 그리스 코르푸 섬을 배경으로 한 <프로스페로의 작은 방>(1945)이며, 이어서 로도스 섬을 배경으로 한 <바다의 비너스에 관한 고찰>을 발표했다. 1957년에는 키프로스 섬을 배경으로 한 <비터 레몬스>로 더프 쿠퍼 기념상을 받았다. 그리스 섬에서의 경험을 토대로 한 그 세 작품을 일컬어 ‘그리스 섬 3부작’이라고도 한다. 제2차 세계대전 당시 이집트에 체류하면서 쓰기 시작한 대작 <알렉산드리아 사중주(저스틴, 발타자르, 마운트올리브, 클레어)>를 프랑스 남부에서 1957년에 완성하였다. 이 작품과 <아비뇽 오중주(무슈, 리비아, 콩스탄스, 세바스티앙, 캥스)>를 쓰는 사이에 이중소설 <퉁크>와 <눈쾀>을 썼는데, 후에 ‘아프로디테의 반란’이라는 제목 아래 하나로 묶었다. 그의 저작 활동은 희곡, 비평서, 번역문, 여행기, 시선집, 외교단 시절의 에피소드에 이르기까지 굉장히 폭넓은 것이었다. 하지만 전시의 알렉산드리아를 가장 심미적이며 찬란하게 보여 주는 <알렉산드리아 사중주>가 그의 작품 중 가장 위대하다는 데에는 의심의 여지가 없다. 1990년 소미에르의 자택에서 숨을 거두기 며칠 전, 최근의 시작들과 프로방스의 역사와 문화에 대해 쓴 <시저의 광막한 환영>이 출간되었다.
