The genius of Cecil Balmond is behind some of the world's most exciting architectural endeavours, from Anish Kapoor's gigantic sculpture Marsyas at Tate Modern to Rem Koolhaas' CCTV buildings in Beijing. Balmond is the great innovator of form and following the success of his book "Informal", now examines nature and its patterns. He looks through drawing and composition at a perception of space that has interconnected narratives. "Element" uses pattern, mathematics and advanced geometry to create an unconventional exploration of design. Balmond's narrative unfolds in three conceptual chapters - elements, pattern, nature - linked by two conceptual bridges - digital 'tectonics' and numbers. Each of these aspects relates to the others in a number of ways, leading to an invaluable insight into the design process, a highly engrossing journey through the world around us from the natural elements to the most advanced building designs.

세실 발몽(지은이)
세실 발몽은 우리 세대의 가장 영향력 있는 창작자들 중의 한명으로 알려져 있으며, 디자이너, 공학자, 이론가, 작가로서 다방면의 활동을 하고 있다. 숫자, 음악, 과학, 비선형적 구조를 이용하여 형태를 생성시키는 연구를 사십년간 해오고 있다. 그는 현재 펜실베이니아 대학 디자인 스쿨(PennDesign) 건축교수이며, 예일대학에서는 사리넨(Saarinen) 방문교수로서, 하바드대학에서는 겐조 단게(Kenzo Tange) 크리틱으로 교육을 해오고 있다. 또한 영국 왕립 건축가협회(Royal Institute of British Architects)와 왕립공학학회(Royal Academy of Engineering)의 펠로우이다. 스리랑카에서 태어나 나이지리아로 이주하여 그곳의 예술과 음악 등의 문화 속에서 교육을 받았으며, 추후 그는 이 점이 그의 개념적인 어휘정립에 많은 영향을 미쳤다고 밝힌 바 있다. 60년대 후반 영국에 있는 아럽(Arup)에 근무하기 시작하여 추후 부사장을 역임하였으며, 2010년 자신의 회사 발몽 스튜디오(Balmond Studio)를 설립하였다. 그의 스튜디오는 건축, 공학, 예술 등의 분야에서 활동하며 여러 공공 예술 프로젝트와 컨설팅을 수행해오고 있다. 그의 저술인 건축의 비형식을 향한 선언(Informal)은 2005년 건축부문 올해의 책으로 선정되어 바니스터 프레쳐 상(Sir banister Fletcher Prize)을 수상하였다. 2015년 현재 런던에 거주하고 있으며 LP 수집과 기타 연주로 여가를 즐기고 있다.
