〈타임스〉 선정 ‘1945년 이후 가장 위대한 50인의 영국 작가’에 이름을 올린 현대 영문학의 대표 작가. 발표하는 작품마다 폭넓은 식견과 지성, 우아한 문체, 치밀한 구성과 절묘한 재미로 대중과 평단의 열렬한 지지를 받았다. 1948년 영국 서리 지방 올더숏에서 태어나 군인이었던 아버지를 따라 싱가포르와 독일, 리비아 등 여러 나라를 돌아다니며 자랐다. 1970년 서식스대학교 영문학부를 졸업한 후 이스트앵글리아대학교에서 문학 석사학위를 받았고, 소설가 맬컴 브래드버리의 지도하에 소설 창작을 공부했다. 1975년 소설집 『첫 사랑 마지막 의식』으로 데뷔했고 이 책으로 서머싯 몸 상을 수상했다. 1992년 『검은 개』를 발표해 『위험한 이방인』에 이어 두번째로 부커상 최종 후보에 올랐고, 1998년 『암스테르담』으로 부커상을 수상했다. 이어 세계적인 베스트셀러 『속죄』로 LA 타임스 도서상, 전미도서비평가협회상 등을 수상했으며, 이 작품을 원작으로 영화 〈어톤먼트〉가 제작되어 큰 사랑을 받았다. 2007년 『체실 비치에서』를 발표해 다시 한번 부커상 최종 후보에 올랐으며 브리티시 북 어워드 올해의 도서상과 작가상을 받았다. 2022년 발표한 자전적 소설 『레슨』으로 새로운 문학적 전환점에 들어섰다는 찬사를 받았다. 그 밖의 작품으로 『이노센트』 『견딜 수 없는 사랑』 『토요일』 『솔라』 『칠드런 액트』 『넛셸』 『나 같은 기계들』 『바퀴벌레』 등이 있으며, 다수의 작품이 영화화되었다. 1983년 왕립 문학회 회원으로 선출되었고, 2000년 영국 왕실로부터 커맨더 작위를 받았으며, 2011년 예루살렘상을 수상했다. 2020년 괴테문화원이 수여하는 괴테 메달을 받았다.
