Includes comics art by contemporary cartoonists (Constantin Alajalov, William Ayers and Ryan Alexander, Lynda Barry, Alison Bechdel, Barry Blitt, Ivan Brunetti, Charles Burns, Daniel Clowes, R. Crumb, Phoebe Gloeckner, Justin Green, Aline Kominsky-Crumb, Jeffrey Machamer, Nathaniel McClennen, Mike Mignola, Jerry Moriarty, Françoise Mouly, Gary Panter, Joe Sacco, Seth, David Small, Art Spiegelman, Adrian Tomine, Carol Tyler, Chris Ware, Karl Wirsum), eight illustrated transcripts from the May 2012 "Comics: Philosophy & Practice" conference at the University of Chicago, and a sampling of images from Henry Jackson Lewis (1837-1891), an artist who was born into slavery and has been called the first African-American cartoonist.
