유도라 웰티(엮은이)

1909년 4월 13일, 미국 미시시피 주 잭슨에서 태어났다. 미시시피 주립대학교, 위스콘신 대학교, 컬럼비아 대학교에서 수학했으며, 1930년대 중반부터 정기적으로 소설을 발표하며 소설가의 길을 걷는다. 『뉴요커』와 『애틀랜틱 먼슬리』에 작품을 게재했고, 1941년 단편소설집 『초록빛 커튼』(A Curtain of Green)을 발표하면서 작가로서의 본격적인 명성을 얻었다. 초기 작품으로는 단편소설집 『넓은 그물』(The Wide Net, 1943), 『황금사과』(The Golden Apples, 1949), 『이니스폴른 호의 신부』(The Bride of the Innisfallen, 1955) 등이 있으며, 이후 1980년대에 『달빛 호수』(Moon Lake, 1980) 등을 발표했다. 중편소설로는 『도둑 신랑』(The Robber Bridegroom, 1942), 장편소설로는 『델타의 결혼식』(Delta Wedding, 1946), 『폰더의 마음』(The Ponder Heart, 1954) 등이 있으며, 『낙천주의자의 딸』(The Optimist’s Daughter, 1972)로 퓰리처상을 수상했다. 그녀는 소설 외에도 수필집 『이야기의 눈』(The Eye of the Story, 1978)과 회고록 『작가의 유년시절』(One Writer’s Beginnings, 1984)을 발표했으며, 회고록은 예상을 뛰어넘는 인기를 얻으며 베스트셀러에 올랐다.
