이 책은 불교가 무엇인지에 대해 알기 쉽게 설명한 입문서이다. 저자는 서론에서 과거 불교가 한국과 중국, 일본, 그리고 동남아시아 여러 나라에 얼마나 큰 사상적ㆍ문화적 영향을 끼쳤는지 하는 것과 20세기에 서양으로 건너간 불교가 동서 문화 융합의 주역으로 현재 얼마나 엄청난 역할을 하고 있는지를 고찰하고 있다.
I부에서는 불교가 어떤 종교이고 붓다는 어떤 분인지를 그의 가르침을 통해 알기 쉽게 설명해 준다. II부에서는 이러한 불교가 어떻게 발전해 왔는가 하는 것을 승가의 형성과 초기 불교의 전개, 대승의 출현과 한국으로 전파된 북방 불교의 모습을 통해 고찰하였다. 마지막 III부에서는 우리의 종교 문화를 결정한 한국 불교가 중국이나 일본과 다른 점은 무엇인지에 대해 그 특징을 중심으로 설명하고 있다.

Part I provides historical background and teachings of Buddhism and a brief life story of the historical Buddha. Part II explains how Buddhism evolved into a major religion by recounting the development of early monasteries and the Mahayana school which characterizes the Northern Buddhism followed in Korea.
