미국의 작가, 교육자, 문화평론가, 사회운동가. 1952년 미국 켄터키주 흑인 분리 구역인 홉킨즈빌에서 태어났다. 글로리아 진 왓킨스라는 본명 대신 외증조모의 이름을 딴 벨 훅스를 필명으로 사용했고, 독자들이 자신의 이름보다 메시지에 집중하길 바라며 필명의 철자를 소문자로만 썼다. 페미니스트로서 젠더와 인종뿐만 아니라 계급, 교육, 사랑, 평화, 예술, 역사, 대중매체, 공동체, 남성성, 교차성 등 폭넓은 주제를 사유하고 말했다. 영문학을 전공하여 스탠퍼드대학교에서 학사 학위를, 위스콘신주립대학교에서 석사 학위를, 캘리포니아주립대학교 산타크루즈캠퍼스에서 박사 학위를 받은 후 스탠퍼드대학교, 예일대학교, 뉴욕시립대학교 등 다수의 대학에서 영문학과 여성학, 아프리카학을 가르쳤다. 훅스가 19세에 쓰기 시작한 《난 여자가 아닙니까?》는 17세기에 시작된 흑인 노예무역부터 노예제 시대, 19세기의 남북전쟁과 재건 시대, 여성 참정권 운동과 짐 크로 체제, 20세기의 세계대전과 흑인민권운동, 페미니즘운동에 이르기까지 미국 역사의 굵직한 사건들을 가로지르며 미국 흑인 여성의 역사를 펼쳐 보인다. 이 책은 《퍼블리셔스 위클리》가 뽑은 ‘지난 20년간 출간된 여성 작가의 책 중 가장 영향력 있는 20권’에 선정됐으며, 이후 훅스가 지은 책으로 《모두를 위한 페미니즘》, 《당신의 자리는 어디입니까》, 《벨 훅스, 당신과 나의 공동체》, 《사랑은 사치일까》, 《남자다움이 만드는 이상한 거리 감》, 《올 어바웃 러브》 등이 있다. 미국도서상 등을 수상하고, 《타임》이 선정한 ‘올해의 여성 100인’, 《애틀랜틱》이 선정한 ‘미국을 대표하는 지식인’에 꼽히기도 한 훅스는 2021년 12월, 향년 69세의 나이로 세상을 떠났다.
