Stories accompany us through life from birth to death. 아서 프랭크(지은이)
1975년에 미국 예일 대학에서 사회학 박사학위를 받았고 같은 해부터 캐나다 캘거리 대학의 사회학과 교수로 재직해 왔으며 현재는 명예교수로 있다. 몸의 사회학 분야 내에서도 특히 질병의 경험과 서사, 생명윤리, 임상윤리, 돌봄윤리에 대해 연구를 계속해 왔고, 전 세계에서 수많은 강연을 하고 있다. 1991년에 자신의 질병 경험을 담은 회고록인 『아픈 몸을 살다』(봄날의책, 2017) 를 출간하였다. 이후 1995년에 질병의 서사에 대한 연구인 『아픈 몸을 이야기하기』(『몸의 증언』, 갈무리, 2013 ; 2판, 갈무리, 2024)를 출간했고, 이 책으로 미국 국립암생존자연합에서 나탈리 데이비스 스핀간 작가상을 수상했다. 그 밖의 주요 저서로 의료윤리에 중점을 둔 The Renewal of Generosity (2004), 이야기하기가 삶에 부여하는 힘에 대한 Letting Stories Breathe (2010), 셰익스피어의 ‘어두운 시절’에 대한 읽기 경험을 담은 King Lear (2022) 등이 있다.
