『인터내셔널 해럴드트리뷴』 『뉴요커』 『파 이스턴 이코노믹 리뷰』 특파원으로 20년 이상 아시아 각지에서 활동했다. 1987년부터 1991년까지 『인터내셔널 해럴드트리뷴』 도쿄 지국장으로 근무했고, 최근에는 아시아판 편집을 담당했다. 영미권에서 가장 뛰어난 일본 입문서로 손꼽히는 전작 『일본의 재구성』(마티, 2008)은 환태평양 도서상 ‘키리야마 상’을 수상하고 해외언론클럽 국제문제 분야 ‘최고의 책’, 『뉴욕 타임스』 ‘올해의 주목할 만한 책’으로 선정되었다.
