1929년에 태어났다. 기자 생활을 하던 1969년 첫 작품 <잉크 트럭>을 발표했다. 1983년 <내가 너를 사랑한 도시>를 발표했으며, 이 작품으로 1984년 퓰리처상과 미국비평가협회상을 수상했다.
