조직론의 세계 최고 권위자이자 경영학계의 시인으로 불리는 제임스 마치 교수는 2003년 《하버드 비즈니스 리뷰》지의 ‘경영 대가들이 뽑은 대가’에서 피터 드러커에 이어 2위를 차지했다. 리더십과 기업의 각종 행태를 문학 작품과 연결하여 설명하는 것으로 전문가들 사이에 유명하며, 미국의 수많은 CEO들이 그의 강의를 듣기 위해 몰려든다. 미국 스탠퍼드대학교의 명예교수이며, 경영학뿐만 아니라 교육, 정치학 및 사회학 분야에서도 교수직을 맡을 정도로 해박한 지식을 갖고 있다. 스탠퍼드대학교에 있기 전에는 캘리포니아대학교와 카네기공과대학에 있었다. 위스콘신대학교에서 학사 학위를 받았고, 예일대학교에서 석사?박사 학위를 취득했다. 주요 저서로는 《Decisions and Organizations》(1989), 《Behavioral Theory of the Firm》(제2판, 1992), 《Organizations》(제2판, 1993), 《The Pursuit of Organizational Intelligence》(1998) 등이 있다. 이 외에도 여러 편의 시를 썼으며, 영화 제작에도 참여한 바 있다.
