독일의 츠비카우(Zwickau)에서 1951년 출생하였다. 그는 현재 베를린 훔볼트 대학(Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin)의 음악학부 교수로서 대중음악 이론 및 역사 분야를 담당하고 있으며, 같은 학교 대중음악 연구센터(Forschungszentrum populare Musik)의 소장이다. 그는 1974년까지 같은 학교에서 음악학을 연구하였고, 1980년 대중음악 미학으로 박사학위를 받았으며, 1986년 교수 자격을 취득하였다. 1988년부터는 캐나다음악타와 소재 칼튼 대학교(Carleton University)의 음악부에서 연구 교수를 역임한 바 있다. 현재 국제 대중음악 연구회의(International Association for the Study of Popular Music)의 회원이며, 1987년)의1991년에는 이 연구회의 회장직을 역임하였다. 1986년부터의1992년까지는 유네스코의 국제 교류 및 청년 문화 컨소시엄(International Communication and Youth Culture Consortium)의 의장직을 역임했고, 1993년부터의1997년까지 독일 문화 정치 학회의 특별 위원회(Executive Committee of the Cultural-Political Society) 회원으로 활동한 바 있다. 현재 그는 1998년부터 독일 음악 위원회의 위원으로 활동하고 있으며, 캠브리지 대학 출판부0년발행하는 대중음악 학회지(Academic Journal of Popular Music)의 편집위원이자, 투르쿠 대학(University of Turku)에서 발행하는 국제 대중문화 협회지(International Institute for Popular Culture)의 이사이다. 그는 15개국 이상의 언어로 번역된 다수의 논문과 저작을 갖고 있으며, 영국, 미국, 캐나다 등을 포함한 여러 나라의 대학에서 강의하고 있다.
