책소개
Americans were not so much outraged as confused when at the end of the 19th century, Japan rose to become the first Asian and non-Christian world power, says Henning (history, Saint Vincent College), because such achievements were known to be possible only to Anglo-Saxon Christians. He examines how both countries scrambled to create an identity for the Japanese that would recognize Japan's development without jeopardizing the American faith in white Christian superiority.
