Seventeen new and previously published papers explore the long-neglected connections between organization theory and research and the ideas and practices related to quality improvement that spread across many organizations in the US during the 1980s and 1990s. Chapters include foundational works that provide theoretical and historical background and papers dealing with such topics as: early experiences and the spread of the quality movement to the public sector; evidence regarding performance improvement at both the micro and macro levels; organizational quality as a cultural variable; contingencies influencing quality improvement efforts; and the effects of technical quality improvement (QI) and innovative human resource management (HRM) practices.
