그래픽 디자인 분야에서 다수의 책을 집필한 세계적인 디자인 작가이자 연구자다. 미국 메릴랜드 인스티튜트 칼리지 오브 아트(Maryland Institute College of Art, MICA)에서 그래픽 디자인 석사 과정을 창립했고 교수로 재직 중이다. 뉴욕 쿠퍼 휴잇 스미스소니언 디자인 뮤지엄(Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum)에서 오랫동안 수석 큐레이터로 일했고 이후 명예 큐레이터로 임명되어 활동해 왔다. 바우하우스 관련 전시를 기획하기도 했다. AIGA 평생 공로 골드 메달을 수상했고, 2019년에는 미국 예술·과학 아카데미(AAAS) 펠로우로 선정되었다.
