웬디 베케트(지은이)
1930년 요하네스버그에서 태어나 다섯 살 때까지 에딘버러에서 지냈으며, 16세에 남아공을 떠나 영국 노트르담의 수녀회에 들어갔다. 수련기간이 끝난 후, 옥스퍼드의 성 안네 대학에서 영문학을 공부했으며 그곳에서 학업우수상을 수상했다. 교사수녀들의 모임인 노트르담회의 회원으로, 남아프리카공화국에서 교사 생활을 한 그녀는 옥스퍼드 대학에서 우수교직원상을 수상했으며 후에 위드워터스랜드 대학에서 강의를 했다. 1970년에 영국으로 돌아와 노포크의 카르멜 수도원에서 수도 생활을 시작했으며, 1980년부터는 본격적으로 미술 연구를 시작했다. 현재 수도원 생활을 계속하며 「현대 여성 예술가」, 「예술과 신성」을 비롯한 예술잡지와, 「인디펜던트」, 「선데이 타임즈」 등 일간지에 글을 쓰고 있다. BBC 방송의 텔레비전 시리즈 '웬디 수녀의 모험'과 '웬디 수녀와 함께 떠나는 미술 여행'으로 유명하고, 교육방송(EBS)을 통해 방영된 '미의 세계-웬디 수녀의 그림이야기' 등의 프로그램을 통해 한국 독자에게도 친숙하다. 지은 책으로 <웬디 수녀의 유럽 미술 산책>, <웬디 수녀의 나를 사로잡은 그림들>, <웬디베켓 수녀의 명화 이야기>, <웬디 수녀의 미국 미술관 기행>, <웬디 수녀의 명상> 등이 있다.
