아일랜드 코크 출신의 철학자. 현 보스턴칼리지 석좌교수. 유니버시티칼리지더블린을 졸업, 캐나다 맥길대학 석사, 파리10대학에서 박사학위를 받았다. 소르본대학, 호주 가톨릭대학, 니스대학의 방문교수를 역임했다. 유럽대륙철학의 다양한 분야, 특히 현상학, 해석학, 종교철학 분야에서 25여 권의 저서가 있고 20여 권의 책을 편집, 공동 편집하였다. 2000년대 이후 재신론으로 대변되는 독창적인 종교철학 사상을 구축하여 가장 탁월한 종교철학자 중 한 사람으로 인정받고 있다. 아일랜드 예술위원회, 고등교육청의 일원, 더블린대학 아일랜드 영화학교 학과장, 왕립 아일랜드 아카데미의 회원, 아일랜드의 공공지식인으로서 북아일랜드 평화협정의 초안 작성에 참여했다. 종교, 인종, 역사 갈등으로 점철된 지역에서 서로 대화하고 이야기를 공유함으로써 화해와 치유의 장을 여는 <게스트북 프로젝트>를 주도했다. 저서로 The Wake of the Imagination, Poetics of Imagining, 『현대 유럽철학의 흐름』, 『이방인, 신, 괴물』, 『재신론』, 『터치』, 『급진적 환대』(공저) 등이 있고, 그 외 다수의 공동 저서와 논문이 있다.
