윌리엄스칼리지를 졸업하고 하버드대학에서 박사학위를 받았으며, 현재 하버드대학 명예석좌교수로 재직 중이다. 미국역사학회 회장을 역임하였으며, 퓰리처상을 비롯해 여러 저술상을 받은 미국 역사학계를 대표하는 역사가이다. 주요 저서로는 The Ideological Origins of the American Revolution (1967, 퓰리처상과 뱅크로프트상 수상. 『미국혁명의 이데올로기적 기원』으로 번역됨), The Ordeal of Thomas Hutchinson (1974, 전미도서상 수상), Voyagers to the West (1986, 퓰리처상 수상) 등이 있다.
