하버드 비즈니스 리뷰(HBR) 전략담당 편집자로 일을 시작할 때부터 20년 동안 마이클 포터와 협업하고 있다. 현재는 하버드 경영대학원 소속인 ‘전략과 경쟁우위를 위한 포터 연구소’의 선임연구원으로 일하고 있다. 마그레타는 1988년 하버드 비즈니스 리뷰에 실린 최고 논문에 주어지는 맥킨지상을 수상했다. 저서로는 2002년 출간 된 베스트셀러 <경영이란 무엇인가: 경영은 어떻게 작동되고 왜 모든 사람의 일인가>가 있고 15개국에서 출간되었다. HBR에 오기 전 컨설팅업체 베이 앤 컴퍼니의 파트너로 일했고, 컨설턴트로 의료, 첨단 패션, 중공업, 고등교육기관까지 다양한 업계 최고 경영자들에게 활발한 자문 역할을 해왔다. 1983년 하버드 경영대학원에서 경영학 석사(MBA) 과정을 마치기 전까지 문학과 영화 과목을 강의하는 인문학 교수로 재직하기도 했다. 위스콘신대를 우등으로 졸업하고 컬럼비아대에서 석사, 미시간대에서 영문학 박사학위를 수여 받았다.

세계적인 환경운동가이자 사회적기업가 겸 저널리스트.
