Book Introduction
In this illustrated book, Martin Kemp examines the major optically oriented examples of artistic theory and practice, from Brunelleschi's invention of perspective and its exploitation by Leonardo and Duerer to the beginnings of photography. In a discussion of colour theory, Kemp traces two main traditions of colour science - the Aristotelian tradition of primary colours and Newton's prismatic theory that influenced Runge, Turner and Seurat. His book provides information for all those interested in the interaction between science and art.

마틴 켐프(지은이)
레오나르도 다빈치(Leonardo Da Vinci) 연구의 최고 석학 중 한 명으로 50년이 넘도록 다빈치의 작품 세계를 탐구해왔다. 영국 케임브리지 대학에서 자연과학을 배우고 코톨드 예술학교(Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London)에서 미술사를 전공한 그는 레오나르도 다빈치를 포함해 르네상스 시대 작가들의 예술 세계를 과학을 통해서 조망하는 노력을 기울여 왔다. 레오나르도 다빈치 소사이어티(Leonardo Da Vinci Society)에서 활동하고 있으며, 1989년부터는 레오나르도 다빈치 관련 전시회를 기획해 대중들과의 접점을 찾고 있다. 1993년부터 1998년까지 영국학술원(British Academy)에서 연구 교수로 재직했으며 25년 동안 글래스고 대학과 세인트 앤드류스 대학에서 교편을 잡아 왔다. 현재는 옥스퍼드 대학교 예술 사학 분야의 명예교수로 재직하고 있다. 주요 저서로는 『레오나르도 다빈치: 자연과 인간의 경이로운 작품』(1981), 『미술의 과학: 브루넬레스키에서 쇠라까지 서양미술의 광학』(1992), 『장엄한 신체: 레오나르도에서 지금까지 인체의 예술과 과학』 (공저, 2000), 『레오나르도』 (2004) 등이 있다.
