세계가 한 지붕아래 생활공동체로 발전해 가고 있는 글로벌 시대에 살면서 우리 한국에도 세계 각국의 언어와 문화가 홍수처럼 들어오고, 또 한편으로는 한국인의 세계 진출과 한국어와 한국 문화의 전파도 놀라운 속도로 이루어지고 있다. 과학과 문명의 발달, 특히 교통과 소통 수단의 눈부신 발전으로 인해 세계의 모든 국가와 민족의 경계가 허물어지고 있으며, 인터넷의 전 지구적 확산은 문화의 장벽마저 무력해져서 문화가 하나로 통합되고 평준화되는 듯한 착각을 불러일으키기도 한다. 그러나 오히려 이러한 세계화, 정보화 시대야말로 각 민족과 국가의 고유한 풍습, 역사 그리고 문화의 전통을 바로 알고 이어나가는 노력이 더욱 절실하게 요구되는 때이기도 하다.
그동안 선구적인 연구자와 일선 교육자들의 헌신적인 노력으로 한국어와 한국문화를 위한 좋은 교재들이 많이 개발되어 왔다. 그러나 단순한 한국어 회화 능력이나 의사소통의 수단으로서의 한국어가 아닌 한국의 고유한 풍습과 문화를 본격적으로 가르치는 데 적합한 교재, 그러면서도 배우기에 쉽고 흥미로운 교재 개발은 그다지 흡족하게 이루어진 편이 아닌 듯하다. 이러한 문제 의식을 공유한 저자들은 4년 전 뜻을 모아 『외국인을 위한 한국문화의 이해』라는 책을 상재하였는데, 그동안 많은 독자들로부터 과분한 관심과 애정 어린 격려를 받기도 하였다. 이에 저자들은 더 큰 용기를 내어 내용을 대폭적으로 수정, 보완하여 새롭게 교재를 구성하기로 뜻을 모았다.
이 책은 한국어와 한국 문화를 배우려는 이들 중, 1년 이상의 한국어 학습을 거친 외국인이나 해외 교포로서 한국어를 균형 있고 조화롭게 구사하고자 하는 사람들, 또는 한국의 전통문화와 생활 방식의 기본 요소를 효과적으로 학습하고자 하는 사람들을 주요 독서 대상으로 삼아서 이들에게 일상 회화의 수준을 넘어서 보다 체계적으로 한국어와 한국문화를 알려주기 위하여 기획된 것이다. 특히, 한국에서 대학 이상의 높은 교육을 받거나 장기 체류를 하면서 생업을 수행하려는 이들에게 근본적인 적응력과 실질적인 도움을 주고자 노력하였다.

We live in the age of the globalization, when countries all over the world become one community, thus encouraging us to learn the languages and the cultures of other countries. On the contrary, many Koreans, the Korean language, and the Korean culture are becoming known to other countries in high speed. All national and ethnic boundaries are collapsing by the striking development of science, civilization, transportation, and by communication via the global spread of the Internet, further breaking down cultural walls and giving you the illusion of unification and integration. However, this globalization and the information-oriented society acutely require our effort to succeed each nations unique customs, history, and cultural traditions.
In the meantime, the Korean language and good teaching material for the Korean culture have been expertly developed by devoted effort of pioneering researchers and active educators. Despite this effort, it doesn't seem enough that the teaching materials to teach the unique Korean customs, culture and the textbooks to learn easily are developed. The authors who had the same opinions about this problem published a book four years ago titled Understanding of Korean Culture for a Foreigner and gained an undeserved interest and a hearty encouragement from lots of readers. The readers made the authors pluck up their courage and sharply revise to make up for the contents of the book and they decided to re-edit it.
This book is made for those who want to speak the Korean language well for Koreans overseas and foreigners who have been learning the Korean language for more than a year or those who want to learn the Korean traditional culture and the basic Korean lifestyle among those people who want to learn the Korean language and the Korean culture. With this book, the authors intended to let the readers know systematically the Korean language and the Korean culture. They tried to help people to adapt themselves to the new circumstances who have a higher education than university level or want to make a living with a long stay.
