Since Jacob Burckhardt's Kultur der Renaissance in Italien (1869) rhetoric as a significant cultural factor of the renaissance has largely been neglected. The present study seeks to remedy this deficit regarding the arts by concentrating on literary theory and its aspects of imagination (inventio), genre (dispositio of the genera), style (elocutio), mnemonic architecture (memoria) and representation (actio), with illustrative examples taken from Shakespeare's works, but also on the intermedial rhetoric of painting and music. Particular attention is given to the rhetorical ideology of the Renaissance.
Der Band bietet eine kulturhistorische Darstellung der europaischen Renaissance mit dem Schwerpunkt von Poetik und Literatur unter den Aspekten Imagination/Inventio, Gattungstheorie/Dispositio, Stil/Elocutio, Architektur/Memoria sowie Darstellung/Actio. Shakespeares Werke dienen der exemplarischen Veranschaulichung der beschriebenen rhetorischen Phanomene. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit ist der Rhetorik von Malerei und Musik sowie der rhetorischen Kulturideologie gewidmet.

하인리히 F. 플렛(지은이)
영문학, 고전문헌학, 철학, 일반언어학, 비교언어학을 공부한 그는 1972년에 독일 에센대학교 영문학과에 부임하여, 지금은 통합된 뒤스부르크-에센 대학에서명예교수로 봉직하고 있다. 국제수사학사학회(ISHR)의 공동 창립자이자 초대 사무총장을 역임했으며, 1989년에는 “수사학과 르네상스 연구센터”를 설립하여 “르네상스 수사학”(1991), “현재의 수사학” (1995), “21세기 수사학”(2000) 등을 주제로 한 굵직한 학술대회를 개최하기도 했다. 숱한 논문과 비평 및 저서를 통해 수사학에 지대한 관심과 열정을 쏟아온 그의 주요 저서로는 Rhetorik(1974), Intertextuality (1991), Rhetorica movet(1995), Die Aktualitt der Rhetorik(1996), Einfhrung in die rhetorische Textanalyse(2001), Rhetoric and Renaissance Culture(2004) 등이 있다.
