Book Introduction
With its consistent chapter format of key points, checklists, and clinical 'toolboxes,' this work is designed to be accessible to clinicians, administrators, counselors, and line staff, in addition to biological, foster, and adoptive parents. It presents a detailed framework for intervention with traumatized children and adolescents, which can be used in a variety of residential, inpatient, and outpatient settings. The framework consists of ten building blocks, or key treatment targets, such as consistent caregiver response, affect modulation, strengthening executive functions, and identity development. After a review of the framework's theoretical foundation, each chapter covers one building block, with material on how trauma affects behavior, methods of intervention, developmental and cultural considerations, and teaching points for direct caregivers. The book includes 45 reproducible handouts, worksheets, and forms. Blaustein and Kinnibrugh are affiliated with The Trauma Center at the Justice Resource Institute.
