In an old mansion in Cennethisar, a former fishing village near Istanbul, a widow, Fatma, awaits the annual summer visit of her grandchildren. The eldest, Faruk, a dissipated historian, wallows in alcohol as he laments his inability to tell the story of the past from the kaleidoscopic pieces he finds in the local archive; his sensitive leftist sister, Nilgun, has yet to discover the real-life consequences of highminded politics; and Metin, a high school nerd, tries to keep up with the lifestyle of his spoiled society schoolmates while he fantasizes about going to America?an unaffordable dream unless he can persuade his grandmother to tear down her house. But it is Recep’s nephew Hasan, a high school dropout, lately fallen in with right-wing nationalists, who will draw the visiting family into the growing political cataclysm issuing from Turkey’s tumultuous century-long struggle for modernity. 1952년 튀르키예 이스탄불에서 태어났다. 이스탄불 공과대학에서 건축학을 공부하다가 23세에 소설가가 되기로 결심했다. 1982년 첫 소설 『제브데트 씨와 아들들』을 출간하고 ‘오르한 케말 소설상’ 과 《밀리예트》 문학상을 받았다. 다음 해에 출간한 『고요한 집』 역시 ‘마다라르 소설상’과 프랑스의 ‘1991년 유럽 발견상’을 수상했으며, 『하얀 성』(1985)으로 세계적인 명성을 얻기 시작했다. 『검은 책』(1990)으로 ‘프랑스 문화상’을 받았으며, 이 소설을 통해 대중적이면서도 실험적인 작가로 전 세계에 이름을 알렸다. 『새로운 인생』(1994)은 그의 작품 중 가장 실험적인 소설로 평가받으며 단숨에 베스트셀러에 올랐으며, 『내 이름은 빨강』(1998)은 프랑스 ‘최우수 외국 문학상’, 이탈리아 ‘그란차네 카보우르 상’, ‘인터내셔널 임팩 더블린 문학상’ 등을 그에게 안겨 주었다. ‘처음이자 마지막 정치 소설’이라 밝힌 『눈』(2002)을 통해서는 새로운 형태의 정치 소설을 실험했으며, 2003년 자전 에세이 『이스탄불』을 출간했다. 2005년 독일 ‘프랑크푸르트 평화상’과 프랑스 ‘메디치 상’을 받은 데 이어서 “문화들 간의 충돌과 얽힘을 나타내는 새로운 상징들을 발견했다.”라는 평가를 받으며 2006년 노벨 문학상을 수상했다. 2008년에는 특유의 문체와 서술 방식으로 ‘사랑’이라는 주제에 접근한 『순수 박물관』을 발표했고, 2012년 4월 이스탄불에 실제 ‘순수 박물관’을 개관했다. 그 후 이스탄불의 빈민가를 누비는 거리 상인의 일생을 서사적으로 그려 낸 『내 마음의 낯섦』(2014), 오랜 동서양 신화가 매혹적으로 뒤얽힌 『빨강 머리 여인』(2016), 1901년을 배경으로 한 역동적인 역사 소설 『페스트의 밤』(2021)을 발표하며 꾸준히 작품 활동을 이어 오고 있다. 2006년부터 컬럼비아 대학에서 비교문학과 글쓰기를 가르치고 있으며, 보르헤스, 칼비노, 에코의 뒤를 이어 하버드대 노턴 강의를 맡은 후 강연록 『소설과 소설가』(2010)를 출간했다. 에세이로 『다른 색들』(1999)과 직접 그린 그림과 글을 수록한 『먼 산의 기억』(2022)이 있다.
