사바하틴 알리(지은이)
1907년, 지금의 그리스 땅인 귀뮐지네에서 태어났다. 군인인 아버지를 따라 터키 여러 지역을 옮겨다니며 교육을 받았고, 사범학교를 졸업하고 초등학교 교사가 되었다. 1928년에 터키 교육부 장학금을 받고 독일에 다녀온 뒤에도 계속 교사로 일하면서 문예지에 단편소설을 발표하기 시작했다. 1932년, 당시 터키 대통령인 아타튀르크를 모욕했다는 이유로 체포되어 1년 수감 생활을 하고 공무원 자격을 박탈당했다. 1933년 사면된 뒤 공무원 자격을 재취득하고 군 복무도 마쳤다. 1938년에 국립예술학교로 발령받아 집필과 번역 활동을 이어갔다. 1946년, 아지즈 네신과 함께 풍자 주간지 《마르코 파샤Marko Paşa》를 발행했는데, 발표하는 글마다 검열 표적이 됐을 뿐만 아니라 정치적인 견해 때문에 두 차례 투옥되기도 했다. 출소 이후 이념 문제로 탄압받았으며, 견디다 못해 터키에서 벗어나려다 1948년 불가리아 국경에서 살해됐다. 시신은 두 달 반 만에 발견됐다. 오늘날 터키 젊은이들 사이에 사바하틴 알리는 '저항의 아이콘'이자 반드시 읽어야 하는 작가로 자리 잡았다. 주요 작품에 단편소설집 『물레방아』, 『수레』, 『소리』, 『새로운 세계』, 『유리 저택』, 장편 소설 『쿠유자크 출신의 유수프』, 『우리 마음속 악마』, 『모피코트를 입은 마돈나』, 시집 『산과 바람』, 희곡 『포로들』 등이 있다.
