Book Introduction
Renowned author Ariel Dorfman, obsessed for twenty-five years with the malignant shadow General Pinochet cast upon Chile and the world, followed every twist and turn of the four year old trial in Great Britain, Spain and Chile as well as in the U.S., the country that had created Pinochet. Told as a suspense thriller, filled with court-room drama and sudden reversals of fortune, the book at the same time addresses some of today's most burning issues, made all the more urgent after the terrorist attacks of September 11th 2001. What are the limits of national sovereignty in a globalizing world? How does an ever more interconnected world judge crimes committed against humanity? What role do memory and pain and the rights of the survivors play in this struggle for a new system of justice? But above all, the author, by listening carefully to the voices of Pinochet's many victims, explores how can we purge ourselves of terror and fear once we have been traumatized, and asks if we can build peace and reconciliation without facing a turbulent and perverse past.
About the Author
ARIEL DORFMAN is considered to be one of “the greatest Latin American novelists” (Newsweek) and one of the United States’ most important cultural and political voices. Dorfman's numerous works of fiction and nonfiction have been translated into more than thirty languages, including Death and the Maiden, which has been produced in over one hundred countries and made into a film by Roman Polanski. Dorfman has won many international awards, including the Sudamericana Award, the Laurence Olivier, and two from the Kennedy Center. 아리엘 도르프만(지은이)
1942년 아르헨띠나에서 태어난 칠레계 미국 작가이자 인권운동가. 세살 때 미국으로 이주해 뉴욕에서 유년기를 보냈다. 그후 매카시즘의 광풍이 몰아치자 열두살에 가족과 함께 미국을 떠나 칠레로 향했다. 산띠아고에서 대학을 졸업한 후 스물세살에 교수로 임용되어 학생들을 가르치며 글쓰기를 시작했다. 1970년부터 아옌데 정부에서 문화언론 보좌관으로 활동하다 1973년 삐노체뜨의 쿠데타가 일어나자 극적으로 칠레를 탈출, 여러 국가를 떠돌다 미국으로 망명했다. 1985년부터 듀크대학교에서 문학과 라틴아메리카학을 가르치고 있다. 1990년 민간정부가 들어선 칠레로 잠시 귀환했다 다시 미국으로 돌아와 영구 정착했다. 미국 패권주의와 자본주의 주류문화를 비판하며 생태주의와 대안적 삶을 추구하는 활동을 줄기차게 해오고 있으며 “라틴아메리카가 낳은 가장 위대한 작가의 한 사람”으로 불린다. 희곡 『죽음과 소녀』 『독자』, 장편소설 『과부들』 『콘피덴츠』 『체 게바라의 빙산』 『블레이크 씨의 특별한 심리치료법』, 소설집 『우리 집에 불났어』, 시집 『싼띠아고에서의 마지막 왈츠』, 문화비평집 『도널드 덕 어떻게 읽을 것인가』 『제국의 낡은 옷』, 평론집 『미래를 향해 쓰는 작가들』 『공포 몰아내기』, 회고록 『남을 향하며 북을 바라보다』 『아메리카의 망명자』 등 수많은 저서를 발표했다.
